How do I Insure My Collections?
My buddy told me he began collecting pennies when he was a young boy.
He said at first I sorted through my parent’s change jar searching for dates and mint marks that I didn’t have. It didn’t take long before I graduated to frequenting collector stores, trying to either fill in or upgrade the quality of my coins.
It didn’t occur to me to put insurance on the collection until I spoke with my local independent insurance agent during an annual review of coverage. I guess I had assumed the collection would be covered under my homeowner’s policy standard policy. “Not so!” said my agent. “In some policies, coin collections would be covered only to face value of the coins, not the collector value; unless they were appraised and insured to a stated value.”
The thought of being paid fifty cents (The face value of my Indian head penny collection) got my attention. After years of collecting, I finally made a complete list of my collections and had the entire set inspected and appraised. I then turned the entire list and appraisal over to my agent to have the policy endorsed to increase my coverage to include those coins. Now I have the peace of mind, knowing that my collection will be safe until I decide to pass it on to my children.
Yep It does not hurt to talk to us about this very inexpensive coverage. A policy that specially insures your "Treasures" Coins, Toys, guns, Hummels, collections of all kinds of things.
