Deck the Halls!  Is your Church safeguarding your building?

As we prepare to celebrate the joy of the holiday season, many congregations will decorate and add special décor to their places of worship.  While these extra touches add to the splendor of the season, they also pose safety concerns.  Please consider the following hazards as you prepare for the upcoming celebration.
Christmas Trees

  • A real Christmas tree can pose a fire hazard when too dry.  To avoid a problem, purchase a tree with strong needles which are not easily pulled from the limb, snapped in two or dropped from the tree.  To avoid premature drying, water frequently and place away from vents and other heat sources.
  • Or instead, purchase a flame resistant artificial tree to avoid such dangers.
  • All trees need to be properly secured by using rope or wire to a stationary object.  Also, we recommend placing trees in a low-traffic area to avoid being pulled or tipped over onto an individual.

Interior Decoration

  • To avoid falling décor, carefully secure all hanging decorations. Also, avoid decorating at excessive heights where ladders are required.
  • Burning candles are not recommended.  Consider using any number of lovely flame-free options.
  • Inspect lights for deficiencies like cracked bulbs, exposed wires or damaged sockets.  Use indoor lights only.  Be careful not to overload extension cords or electrical sockets by connecting too many strands of lights.  Turn off and unplug all lights when unoccupied.
  • Select décor which is non-flammable and does not pose a choking hazard.  Holiday decorations are a tempting risk for children and should be selected and displayed with safety in mind.

Exterior Decoration

  • Avoid hanging exterior lights at extreme heights where ladders are required.
  • Attach lights to a timer and properly secure them to a stationary object.
  • Nativity scenes and other lawn ornaments are tempting targets for vandals.  Provide adequate security to avoid a theft.
